One minute you’re making your way through the TBR list, up to date with the latest releases and giving out book recommendations to anyone who will listen.

Then it happens. You hit a slump.

The books have been shelved, you’ve fallen down the black hole of social media and end up binge watching YouTube, but not to worry. It happens to even the most hardcore of readers and today I am going to share some of my top tips to beat that dreaded reading slump!

Go to a bookstore

Is there anything better than a spontaneous trip to your local bookstore? To buy a new book is the most obvious cure, but a few hours of traipsing among rows of books with the new book smell looming in the air is sure to do the trick.

Read something light

You can’t imagine picking up that 600+ page novel just yet, so read something light! Take up an entertaining young adult book, a collection of short stories or a humorous book that will show you the enjoyment of reading again. For me, a book with humour is what pulls me through, in fact the last book to get me out of a slump was Colm O’Regan’s Irish Mammies series!

Set achievable goals

If you haven’t read anything for a while it’s very unlikely that you will open a novel and devour five to six chapters in one sitting. Instead, divide the book up into small sections. Take a post it note or bookmark and place it at a level you’re happy with, like twenty or so pages, this way you see the book as an achievable feat, not a daunting one. Take out the marker and start again. You’ll soon be reading your way through that massive TBR list.

Log off and just read

Put the phone DOWN. Forget the one more YouTube video, Netflix show or tweet before bed, enter Airplane mode and open a book. It’s a proven fact that the blue light from your device affects your sleeping pattern, so decide to take the more effective approach and read to unwind. Not only are you working on your reading but you will also be getting more sleep.

Fill any free time with reading

Enduring a long bus journey or train ride?  Take every small pocket of unused time as a golden opportunity to read. Little by little that book will be completed!

Read a book blog

If you find blog reading has completely taken over from your physical books, look up a book blog! Nothing gets me motivated to read more than a discussion, review or haul of all the beautiful books I could be reading or the new releases that are to come.

Go digital

I know, I know. As a fellow bookworm it’s almost sacrilegious to suggest screen over paper but hear me out. There are many benefits to owning a device with e-book availability and these days you don’t even need an actual e-reader, download the Kindle app on your iPhone, iBooks or Google books on any android smartphone and Voilà, you’re good to go. Choose a book on your phone over endlessly scrolling through your social media feeds and you will be back reading in no time.

That’s just some of the tips that usually work for me. Let me know what reading hacks work for you in the comments below. Happy reading 🙂

  1. These are great ways to get over a reading slump.
If I hit a slump sometimes I just step away for awhile and do other things e.g play The Sims. After a day or two I just start back on easy to read books.

    Great post! 😊☺️
